  1.                               About DEX-i-cal
  2.  
  3.            DEX-i-cal is a simple desktop utility for storing
  4.            vital information.  It's simplicity is a function
  5.            of its design and purpose.  A telephone book type
  6.            directory, a telephone dialer plus various calendar
  7.            functions are arranged in a comfortable format
  8.            which makes comprehension easy.
  9.  
  10.            Included in the program is a Tutorial, found in the
  11.            menu of the [U]tility subdirectory.  This goes into
  12.            the design and purposes of the program in greater
  13.            detail than is needed right now.

  16.            The demo program has limitations you should be aware
  17.            of and are discussed below.

  21.                                About This Disk
  22.  
  23.            This is the master disk for the DEX-i-cal demonstration
  24.            program.  It is not useful beyond the installation
  25.            procedure.  It is not copy protected and so can be used
  26.            again.  You are encouraged to distribute it to any who
  27.            may be interested in learning its features.  It allows
  28.            up to 50 filecards, (storing and dialing 150 telephone
  29.            numbers,) unlimited calendar entries and memos of any
  30.            length.  The program is only useful for 6 months from
  31.            the date of installation, though it can be reinstalled
  32.            indefintely.  Care must be taken, though, not to erase
  33.            stored data in a new installation.  At the 6 month limit
  34.            data is not destroyed.  All the data can be recovered
  35.            with a newly created demo EXE file or with the purchase
  36.            of the full program itself.

  39.                                    HOW TO
  40.  
  41.            The installation is begun by striking <DX]<ENTER>.  There-
  42.            after you will be directed through the short steps of the
  43.            installation.  Once completed, you are encouraged to
  44.            store the master disk in a safe place in the event you
  45.            want to reinstall the program.

  47.            If you do reinstall:

  49.                     DO NOT DIRECT THE NEW EXE FILE TO A DRIVE
  50.                     WITH YOUR DATA FILES.  THEY WILL BE ERASED!

  52.            [DX]<ENTER> will also boot the working program from your
  53.            A or C drive.

  58.                              Since the Tutorial
  59.

  61.             While we believe DEX-i-cal is a simple program to
  62.             use, we recommend you read the Tutorial found in
  63.             the [U]tility menu.  It is an interactive program
  64.             and will be a comprehensive guide to getting the
  65.             most out of your program.

  67.             However, the Tutorial was written for version 4.07
  68.             and this is version 5.36.  The changes have been
  69.             significant.

  72.                              The Telephone Dialer
  73.  
  74.             The automatic telephone dialer was installed as has
  75.             a variety of search conditions that were not active
  76.             until now.
  77.  
  78.             The dialing module offers a lightbar menu for the
  79.             first time in DEX-i-cal.
  80.  
  81.                       The light bar menu is directed by the up
  82.                       and down arrows, or by selecting the
  83.                       first letter of the desired choice and
  84.                       then striking <ENTER>.
  85.  
  86.             The default modem setting is 1200 baud, pulse dialing and
  87.             for com1.  You can change this prior to selecting a number
  88.             for dialing by entering [M] as shown at the base of the
  89.             screen.

  91.             You are then shown the current settings and a lightbar
  92.             menu offering tone dialing, coms 1 and 2 and a variety of
  93.             baud rates.  You can use the up and down arrows to move
  94.             through the selections, or enter the first letter of each
  95.             line you wish to select.

  101.                       you will have chosen dial tone, com1 and
  102.                       1200 baud.  If you strike [c] a second time
  103.                       you will have chosen com2.  If you strike [c]
  104.                       twice and <ENTER> each time, the last one
  105.                       selected will be the com port of choice.
  106.  
  107.             If you are not certain about how your modem has been set up
  108.             consult the manual that came with your PC or your modem.
  109.  
  110.             A note about the numbers on your filecards:  when adding
  111.             cards to your system you will notice there is room for
  112.             3 phone numbers and area codes for each.  Do not enter
  113.             an area code that is similar to your own, for the program
  114.             will dial it and the telephone system will not accept it.
  115.             You are offered two prefix choices before the actual
  116.             number.  These prefix numbers are access numbers used to
  117.             access toll calls.  '1' and/or '8' or a '9' used on
  118.             switchboards to access an outside line.

  120.             If you are in Connecticut, delete the areacode on the file-
  121.             card for Franklin Service Systems.  If, in Connecticut, '354'
  122.             is a local call for you, do not use the prefix '1' if you
  123.             were to call FSS.
  124.  
  125.             With the appropriate filecard on the screen, striking [T] will
  126.             bring up a lightbar menu consisting of the phone numbers on
  127.             that card.  Move the lightbar with the up and down arrow keys,
  128.             and strike <ENTER> at the appropriate choice.  To call a number
  129.             with the prefix '1', strike <ENTER> when the lightbar is at the
  130.             '1' and the down arrow key to move the lightbar to the number of
  131.             choice.  Strike <ENTER> a second time, after which the modem
  132.             takes charge of your phone.

  135.             Your handset is locked out of the ability to transmit until you
  136.             see the note to 'strike <ENTER> at the base of your screen.  You
  137.             must strike <ENTER> to regain voice transmission at that time.

  139.             As of this writing, initializing your modem disables your
  140.             parallel port.  To activate the printer connected to the
  141.             parallel port you must reboot the computer.  This problem will
  142.             be rectified soon and a corrected EXE file will be sent to all
  143.             registered owners at no charge.

  147.                                  Case Agreement
  148.  
  149.             Also, where the Tutorial tells you that case agreement is
  150.             essential for most searches, this is no longer true.  'Smith'
  151.             on your filecard will be found if you search on 'SMITH' or
  152.             even 'sMiTh.'

  155.                                 Alternate MEM files
  156.  
  157.             A couple of words of caution: PEER.MEM is an essential
  158.             part of the program.  If you experience a power failure
  159.             in the midst of using the program, or for any reason you
  160.             exit the program in any way other than the [X] selection
  161.             from the main menu, you may lose important data stored in
  162.             PEER.MEM.  For that reason you will find PEER.BAK in your
  163.             directory.  Should you not be able to boot the program try:

  165.                    c:>    COPY PEER.BAK PEER.MEM <ENTER>

  167.             and reboot the program.
  168.  
  169.                         DO NOT RENAME PEER.BAK TO PEER.MEM
  170.  
  171.              for that will preclude its value in the future...

  173.          Also, if you cannot locate a card after appending it, try
  174.          reindexing from the [U]tility subdirectory.

  176.          AND BACK UP YOUR DATA OFTEN.
