- About DEX-i-cal
-
- DEX-i-cal is a simple desktop utility for storing
- vital information. It's simplicity is a function
- of its design and purpose. A telephone book type
- directory, a telephone dialer plus various calendar
- functions are arranged in a comfortable format
- which makes comprehension easy.
-
- Included in the program is a Tutorial, found in the
- menu of the [U]tility subdirectory. This goes into
- the design and purposes of the program in greater
- detail than is needed right now.
-
-
- The demo program has limitations you should be aware
- of and are discussed below.
-
-
-
- About This Disk
-
- This is the master disk for the DEX-i-cal demonstration
- program. It is not useful beyond the installation
- procedure. It is not copy protected and so can be used
- again. You are encouraged to distribute it to any who
- may be interested in learning its features. It allows
- up to 50 filecards, (storing and dialing 150 telephone
- numbers,) unlimited calendar entries and memos of any
- length. The program is only useful for 6 months from
- the date of installation, though it can be reinstalled
- indefintely. Care must be taken, though, not to erase
- stored data in a new installation. At the 6 month limit
- data is not destroyed. All the data can be recovered
- with a newly created demo EXE file or with the purchase
- of the full program itself.
-
-
- HOW TO
-
- The installation is begun by striking <DX]<ENTER>. There-
- after you will be directed through the short steps of the
- installation. Once completed, you are encouraged to
- store the master disk in a safe place in the event you
- want to reinstall the program.
-
- If you do reinstall:
-
- DO NOT DIRECT THE NEW EXE FILE TO A DRIVE
- WITH YOUR DATA FILES. THEY WILL BE ERASED!
-
- [DX]<ENTER> will also boot the working program from your
- A or C drive.
-
-
-
-
- Since the Tutorial
-
-
- While we believe DEX-i-cal is a simple program to
- use, we recommend you read the Tutorial found in
- the [U]tility menu. It is an interactive program
- and will be a comprehensive guide to getting the
- most out of your program.
-
- However, the Tutorial was written for version 4.07
- and this is version 5.36. The changes have been
- significant.
-
-
- The Telephone Dialer
-
- The automatic telephone dialer was installed as has
- a variety of search conditions that were not active
- until now.
-
- The dialing module offers a lightbar menu for the
- first time in DEX-i-cal.
-
- The light bar menu is directed by the up
- and down arrows, or by selecting the
- first letter of the desired choice and
- then striking <ENTER>.
-
- The default modem setting is 1200 baud, pulse dialing and
- for com1. You can change this prior to selecting a number
- for dialing by entering [M] as shown at the base of the
- screen.
-
- You are then shown the current settings and a lightbar
- menu offering tone dialing, coms 1 and 2 and a variety of
- baud rates. You can use the up and down arrows to move
- through the selections, or enter the first letter of each
- line you wish to select.
-
- if you strike,
-
- [d]<ENTER>[c]<ENTER][1]<ENTER>
-
- you will have chosen dial tone, com1 and
- 1200 baud. If you strike [c] a second time
- you will have chosen com2. If you strike [c]
- twice and <ENTER> each time, the last one
- selected will be the com port of choice.
-
- If you are not certain about how your modem has been set up
- consult the manual that came with your PC or your modem.
-
- A note about the numbers on your filecards: when adding
- cards to your system you will notice there is room for
- 3 phone numbers and area codes for each. Do not enter
- an area code that is similar to your own, for the program
- will dial it and the telephone system will not accept it.
- You are offered two prefix choices before the actual
- number. These prefix numbers are access numbers used to
- access toll calls. '1' and/or '8' or a '9' used on
- switchboards to access an outside line.
-
- If you are in Connecticut, delete the areacode on the file-
- card for Franklin Service Systems. If, in Connecticut, '354'
- is a local call for you, do not use the prefix '1' if you
- were to call FSS.
-
- With the appropriate filecard on the screen, striking [T] will
- bring up a lightbar menu consisting of the phone numbers on
- that card. Move the lightbar with the up and down arrow keys,
- and strike <ENTER> at the appropriate choice. To call a number
- with the prefix '1', strike <ENTER> when the lightbar is at the
- '1' and the down arrow key to move the lightbar to the number of
- choice. Strike <ENTER> a second time, after which the modem
- takes charge of your phone.
-
-
- Your handset is locked out of the ability to transmit until you
- see the note to 'strike <ENTER> at the base of your screen. You
- must strike <ENTER> to regain voice transmission at that time.
-
- As of this writing, initializing your modem disables your
- parallel port. To activate the printer connected to the
- parallel port you must reboot the computer. This problem will
- be rectified soon and a corrected EXE file will be sent to all
- registered owners at no charge.
-
-
-
- Case Agreement
-
- Also, where the Tutorial tells you that case agreement is
- essential for most searches, this is no longer true. 'Smith'
- on your filecard will be found if you search on 'SMITH' or
- even 'sMiTh.'
-
-
- Alternate MEM files
-
- A couple of words of caution: PEER.MEM is an essential
- part of the program. If you experience a power failure
- in the midst of using the program, or for any reason you
- exit the program in any way other than the [X] selection
- from the main menu, you may lose important data stored in
- PEER.MEM. For that reason you will find PEER.BAK in your
- directory. Should you not be able to boot the program try:
-
- c:> COPY PEER.BAK PEER.MEM <ENTER>
-
- and reboot the program.
-
- DO NOT RENAME PEER.BAK TO PEER.MEM
-
- for that will preclude its value in the future...
-
- Also, if you cannot locate a card after appending it, try
- reindexing from the [U]tility subdirectory.
-
- AND BACK UP YOUR DATA OFTEN.
